Needle Felting Class 2/16

Learn the craft of needle felting!

We will learn the basics and safety of using felting needles, make something flat, and make something 3D. This class is for exploration. Follow specific instructions with the instructor or make your own felted creation!

Best for ages 7 and up!

All participants will receive their own needle felting kit containing a felting pad, needle(s), eyes (little pegs) and some wool to use in class and keep for future projects.

Become a spinster!

Learn to make your own yarn. In two sessions you will learn the basics of using a drop spindle to make a single ply yarn, a 2-ply yarn, and finishing techniques. There will be tea and coffee available and possibly some snacks.

Each participant will receive a kit that includes a drop spindle and a variety of roving (wool to spin). Everyone is encouraged to keep spinning and come to Fiber Fridays for any troubleshooting or tips

Date: February 21-22

Time: 2pm - 4pm

Location: Arcticorp Building, downtown Juneau 418 Harris St. Rm 403

Tricky to find, specific directions will be emailed to registrants!

Please note this building is not the most accessible, there is not an elevator. To access the least amount of stairs, enter through the 5th St. entrance. Participants will need full use of arms and legs, modifications can be made! Pants are recommended.

Time to Dye! Online series

An online course series with live zoom sessions! All levels of experience welcome, beginner to advanced.

In this 3-part series we will dye 4 skeins of yarn, and learn the following:

  • Safety while dyeing

  • Required tools/supplies (what you can use at home)

  • Basic how to’s and terms for using acid dyes

We will play with a few techniques to create:

  • Variegated colorways

  • Speckling

  • Solids

Materials can be purchased with this class for pickup or shipping, or provide your own. It is recommended to wear a mask when mixing powder dyes.

Classes will be virtual tutorials, participants are not expected to be dyeing yarn while also zooming. Recorded videos and written instructions will be provided.

Live zoom sessions: January 10, 17 & 24   at 1pm-2pm (recommended to set aside time to dye after ea. zoom session)

Kit Materials:

  • 4 dye colors, 1 oz ea

  • 4 blank yarn (fingering weight, sock or sport)

  • Citric acid

  • Glauber’s salt

  • 2 - pr gloves

  • 1 - mask

  • 1- 100ml beaker

  • 1- 60mL syringe

  • 1-10mL syringe

  • 1- 3mL syringe

  • 1-1mL syringe

You will need:

  • Heat source

  • Pot or pan for dyeing in

  • Utensils for stirring
